The Washington Redskins selected Baylor Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III with the No. 6 overall pick in SB Nation's initial 2012 NFL Mock Draft. Ryan Van Bibber explains the selection:

John Beck, Rex Grossman...neither of these guys have shown they can be the future in Washington. That changes with the selection of RG3. Mike Shanahan finally gets the building block he needs to finally make the Redskins a threat in the NFC East. Griffin may not have the complete package that Andrew Luck has, but he would be worthy of the first overall pick in any other year.

Griffin took home Heisman honors Saturday after leading Baylor to a 9-3 record and a third-place finish in the Big 12. His college career will conclude this Dec. 29 when Baylor takes on the Washington Huskies in the Alamo Bowl.

Griffin completed 72.4 percent of his pass attempts in 2011, throwing for 3998 yards, 36 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. His 192.3 passer rating led the FBS. On the ground, he added 161 carries for 644 yards (an average of four yards per carry) and nine touchdowns.

Redskins quarterbacks have tallied a passer rating of 70.5, which ranks No. 31 in the 32-team NFL, making quarterback Washington's most obvious need.

With the Washington Redskins falling to the New England Patriots on Sunday in a thrilling football game, ending on a Rex Grossman interception, they might have put themselves right in line to potentially draft a quarterback. With the loss to the Patriots, it puts the Redskins at 4-9 for the season. If the 2012 NFL season were to end today, the Washington Redskins would hold the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Currently however the Redskins are tied with five other teams, record wise. The 'Skins are tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, and the Cleveland Browns. Based on current strength of schedule, the Redskins would hold the SOS tie breaker over all of the other teams they are currently tied with.
