The Washington Redskins' trade with the St. Louis Rams should make it easy for people to write out the top two picks of their 2012 NFL Mock Draft. In trading the No. 6 overall pick, a 2012 second-round pick, a 2013 first-round pick and a 2014 first-round pick to move up to No. 2, the Redskins all but assured that they will take Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

The Redskins hope that Griffin can be their signal-caller for the next 10 years and beyond, figuring that the heavy price to pay was necessary to land that kind of player. The alternatives were signing a retread free agent, picking someone like Ryan Tannehill at No. 6 or sticking with Rex Grossman and John Beck.

The Rams, meanwhile, will have a chance to replenish their depth with the extra picks. The latest NFL Mock Draft has them picking wide receiver Justin Blackman at No. 6.

The Washington Redskins are believed to be one of the teams who will be in play to move up for Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III in the 2012 NFL Draft. As it stands, the Redskins are believed to be the frontrunners to trade up with the St. Louis Rams to acquire the second overall pick to select Griffin. In the report however, there appears to still be a big sticking point with what the Redskins are willing to part with in order to get Griffin.

• Washington (No. 6): The Redskins appear willing to trade their first-round pick next year, as well as their No. 6 overall pick this year. But they aren't willing to include their second-rounder this year, which isn't acceptable to the Rams.

It appears the Redskins are stuck in not wanting to give up the first two rounds of their draft plus next year's first-round pick. That is the cost of a potential franchise quarterback when you're trying to get to the No. 2 overall pick, however. Especially where there are 2-3 other teams who could be in the running as well.

As the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine continues to take place over the weekend, teams are not only taking this opportunity to evaluate potential draftees, but also to meet with one another about possible draft trades, and yes Redskins fans, another outlet is reporting the St. Louis Rams have had at least preliminary discussions with the Washington Redskins regarding the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. That pick presumably would be used on Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III.

The word in Indianapolis is the St Louis Rams will do everything possible to move the second pick of the draft. We hear there have been exploratory talks with the Washington Redskins in the early going.

The Redskins desperately seek an upgrade at quarterback for next season, and Griffin would certainly be one. The Cleveland Browns are the other team reported to be hot to trade up to No. 2, and they currently have better trading chips to offer in terms of draft picks than the Redskins, so only time will tell how this all shakes out.

With the offseason just getting underway for the Washington Redskins, it's quite clear that their number one objective will be finding a player they believe can develop into a franchise quarterback.

Speculation has already run rampant throughout Redskins land in recent weeks as to who the team may be targeting, and whether that may come in free agency or in April's draft.

But according to Washingtonian magazine, the team already has its sights set on their new QB.

(More after the jump)

This from Carol Ross Joynt:

Washington Redskins president of operations Dennis Greene was overheard telling people at a Washington Economic Club luncheon today that a new quarterback has been chosen, "and fans will be elated." Greene said the mystery player's name won't be revealed until April, when the NFL draft occurs.

Apparently, the Redskins know who they're going to draft already, even if it's only January 20th.

Which is before the Senior Bowl ... and the Combine ... and free agency ... and pro days and private workouts ... and notwithstanding the fact that other teams may be targeting the same player. But no matter, because fans will be elated, right?

The Redskins were contacted by the magazine, with spokesman Tony Wyllie stating "we have not named our 2012 starting QB."

In other news, this is going to be a long three months, folks.

If the 2012 NFL Draft were held today, the Washington Redskins would own the No. 7 overall pick, and would thus be out of the running to pick top-flight quarterbacks Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III. Instead, Russ Lande of The Sporting News says, the team would likely select Penn State Nittany Lions defensive end Devon Still.

"The Redskins have many holes and would love to get a quarterback," Lande says, "but they're not drafting high enough to have a shot at Luck or Griffin." Despite that, Washington wouldn't be disappointed to land Still, who Lande says "can be productive playing end in the Redskins' 3-4 scheme."

In three seasons at Penn State, Still recorded 113 tackles (55 solo), 10.5 sacks, 32.5 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble. His performance as a senior earned him the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award and Consensus All-American honors.
