The Washington Capitals submitted a poor performance on Tuesday, falling, 3-0, to the New York Islanders at home to snap a three-game winning streak. Washington fired just 17 shots in the loss and were consistently unable to come up with good opportunities to score.

The Islanders scored once in every period. John Tavares scored his 17th early in the first period, and P.A. Parenteau scored the other two. His third-period goal on the power play with 7:22 remaining in the contest effectively sealed the game in New York's favor.

Washington has been able to win in the past while being outshot due to the brilliance of Tomas Vokoun, but it wasn't meant to be on this night.

Unfortunately for the Washington Capitals, the second period was not much different than the first as the New York Islanders dominated play and took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.

The Islanders controlled the flow of play both offensively and physically. P.A. Parenteau put New York up 2-0 at 6:05 when his snap shot beat Tomas Vokoun for his eighth goal of the season.

After that, the Islanders continued to press, giving the Caps little room to maneuver, but even when the Caps did get some breathing room, they failed to maintain any momentum until the end of the period. A spirited shift from the second line of Brooks Laich, Troy Brouwer and Mike Knuble brought both the team and fans to life and the Caps eventually earned a power play, which will continue into the third period.

The Caps had five shots in both the first and second periods for a total of 10, while the Islanders have 18 through 30 minutes.

The New York Islanders may be leading the Washington Capitals 1-0, but the Caps are beating themselves.

Three penalties for the Caps cost them as John Tavares' power play goal has the Islanders on top after 20 minutes.

Tavares extended his point streak to 10 games and gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 12:05. With Karl Alzner in the penalty box for holding, Tavares tapped in a cross-ice slap pass from Mark Streit for his 17th goal of the season. The Islanders' 1-0 lead was the first time that the Caps trailed at home since December 13 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Washington committed two penalties after that, starting with Jeff Halpern's tripping penalty at 17:27. Just 21 seconds later, Jason Chimera received two minutes for slashing, a penalty that the Caps will have to kill off to start the second period.

Shots are 10-5 in favor of New York.

So, this photo from Capitals radio play-by-play man John Walton just crossed our Twitter wire.

Nope, your eyes aren't deceiving you. Those are two new banners specially added to commemorate the Capitals finishing with the first seed in the Eastern Conference in 2010 and 2011. You know, when they lost in the first round to Montreal and in the second round to Tampa Bay, respectively.

Now, we'll preface this by saying that it's Ted Leonsis' building and he can raise or lower whatever banners he likes. But we'll just point out that many efforts to make a franchise seem more successful than it really is can backfire. Quite the contrary, it can actually make said franchise seem more desperate and pathetic than the reality. Have we so quickly forgotten the lessons of these beauties?

We're admittedly old school about this sort of thing, but if we ran the Verizon Center, we'd adhere to the late Red Auerbach's guidelines for banners: championships only. That means everything comes down except the Bullets' spiffy 1977-78 flag and Georgetown's 1984 NCAA basketball championship banner. Retired numbers can stay, but every other ultimately meaningless piece of cloth can be auctioned off for charity. At least if that were the case, the banners would do some good, instead of serving as a memory of playoff disappointments past.

The Caps look to end their four-game homestand with a 4-0 record Tuesday against the Islanders.

The Washington Capitals are 3-for-3 during their current homestand, but they still have one more game to go at the friendly confines of Verizon Center as the New York Islanders pay a visit Tuesday.

Sunday, the Caps defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 behind 43 saves from Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun is in the midst of a nine-game start streak, the most for a Washington goaltender in about five years. Vokoun has been in goal for the Caps' last seven wins.

Someone, however, who has not been in the lineup recently is Mike Green. Monday, the team announced that Green will undergo abdominal surgery and will miss four to six weeks.

Sunday's win propelled the Caps into first place in the Southeast Division for the first time since mid-November, but the Florida Panthers regained that spot Tuesday in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins. The Caps' fourth straight win Tuesday would put them back on top.

The Islanders, on the other hand, find themselves in 14th place in the Eastern Conference and a 3-1 loss to the Nashville Predators Monday did not help that. New York will be the fourth consecutive opponent for Washington that will be on the second game of a back-to-back set.
