SB Nation DC - Maryland Vs. Miami: Terps Rally, But Fall In Double Overtime In Wild Gamehttps://cdn.vox-cdn.com/community_logos/48897/dc-fave.png2012-02-02T09:32:20-05:00http://dc.sbnation.com/rss/stream/25278262012-02-02T09:32:20-05:002012-02-02T09:32:20-05:00Maryland Vs. Miami: Mark Turgeon Gets Tossed, Terps Rally, Victimized By Bad Call

In its most basic sense, Mark Turgeon getting ejected from Maryland's 90-86 double-overtime loss to Miami was actually pretty helpful. When Turgeon was thrown out arguing a charging call on Nick Faust, the Terps were down by 11 points with just over seven and a half minutes remaining. The Terps eventually made a furious comeback to send the game into overtime, then double overtime before losing.

If you ask Turgeon, none of that was part of the plan. Via Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun:

"I wasn't trying to get kicked out. I apologize for that," Turgeon said. "Obviously, [it] woke our guys up. They played inspired."

Ultimately, it worked in terms of getting the Terps back into the game. Problem is, it didn't stop the referees from blowing an obvious offensive basket interference at the beginning of the second overtime. Here's a still of the play, which clearly shows Shane Larkin touching the ball in the cylinder.

The Terps never led the rest of the way in the loss. If Turgeon hadn't been ejected in the second half, he may have ejected himself after that one.

The Maryland Terrapins trailed the Miami Hurricanes 34-23 at halftime as Terrell Stoglin went down with an injury and the Terps offense took a tumble. In the second half however, Stoglin came back onto the court and helped lead a furious comeback for the Terps, scoring 18 points in the second half.
In overtime, the Terps and the Hurricanes battled back and fourth leading to another overtime period. In the second overtime, the Terps just couldn't sink their shots late and the Hurricanes were able to hold on for the 90-86 victory. Stoglin ended the game leading the Terps in scoring with 33 points while Alex Len added 11 points and 8 rebounds.

The Maryland Terrapins will catch a major break as they prepare for a key ACC showdown against Miami. Hurricanes center Kenny Kadji arrived to the game with a head injury, according to Miami radio man Joseph Zagacki. He will not play and will be replaced in the lineup by DeQuan Jones.

Kadji is third on the team in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game, and is second on the team in rebounding, averaging 5.7 per game. Jones is averaging 6.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in 14.4 minutes per game.

<strike>Zagacki also reports that Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga will not be in attendance due to illness. Larranaga, of course, is the former longtime coach of George Mason.</strike>

The Terrapins will be on the road on Wednesday to face another .500 ACC team, the Hurricanes of Miami.

The Maryland Terrapins head south tonight to take on the Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables, a place that has not been hospitable since the 'Canes joined the ACC. Maryland is 0-5 on the road at Miami in recent years. The game starts at 8 and can be seen on ESPN3. For more on this matchup and what it means for each of the teams involved, here is our Maryland Terrapins blog Testudo Times.

Both of these teams will enter the game tonight at 3-3 in the ACC and tied for sixth place in the conference. The winner will get a crucial victory over a mid-tier conference foe, find themselves with a winning record in conference play, and receive a sizable boost to their bubble hopes. That said: this is a much more important contest for Miami, the home team with real NCAA Tournament ambitions, than Maryland.

That pretty much sums it up. This could be a very big win for the Terrapins if they can get it, but the Hurricanes probably aren't going to be rolling over on their home court.
