The Washington Nationals are persisting in their efforts to trade left-handed pitcher John Lannan. According to the latest report from Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports, the team has talked with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies about a potential deal, but nothing is close.

Washington reportedly wants whatever team that gets Lannan to pay the rest of his salary. The lefty is due $3.5 million of his original $5 million salary this year. The Nationals also want at least one "legitimate" player in return.

That asking price did not appeal to the Rockies, according to Rosenthal's report, who would like to add a starter. Los Angeles was merely exploring the possibility rather than talking too seriously about a deal.

Lannan is pitching in Triple-A, and not doing a very good job of it. He has a 4-5 record and a 5.63 ERA in 10 starts.

With Drew Storen still on the disabled list and the Henry Rodriguez experiment now over after some disastrous recent outings, the Nationals have turned to Tyler Clippard as closer, but the team still needs some reinforcements in the bullpen. Help may be coming via trade, according to Buster Olney of ESPN:

The unfortunate circumstance for Washington is that Lannan, a former Opening Day starter for the Nationals, has struggled mightily since his demotion to Class AAA Syracuse. His 3-5 record with a 6.12 ERA in nine starts certainly has not increased his tradeability, nor does the five million dollar salary Lannan earns make him easy to deal.

The Washington nationals needed outfielders this past offseason, and that was before they lost Michael Morse and Jayson Werth to injuries. Peter Bourjos is a name that has been linked to the Nationals for a few months now, and the timing seems as good as ever considering he has sort of lost his spot in the outfield to Mike Trout. And it doesn't look like he will be getting it back anytime soon. SB Nation breaks down why the rumors make sense.

The Nationals are in need of outfielders due to injuries and the Angels, of course, need help with their bullpen. Still, it is a bit surprising that they would feel so in need of bullpen help that they would part with Bourjos, who figured to be a fixture in the outfield in Anaheim for years to come. The Angels will also likely be looking into open market options for a catcher, following the announcement that Chris Iannetta would need wrist surgery and will miss 6-8 weeks.

John Lannan is a natural fit for this scenario as he is someone that the Nationals have been trying to move since the end of Spring Training. But he isn't a natural fit as a reliever so the Angels might try to pry a different player away from the Nationals.

Since Washington Nationals pitcher John Lannan was demoted to the AAA Syracuse Chiefs after spring training, the popular belief was that the Nationals were going to trade him to a team that was looking for a No. 5 pitcher. Unfortunately, a weak start in Syracuse has cooled interest in the one-time Nationals ace.

Lannan is currently 2-3 with a 6.10 ERA in six starts for the Chiefs. He's pitched a total of 31 innings, has struck out 17 batters to 13 walks, and has allowed 40 hits overall, including three home runs. With his weak start, along with his $5 million per-year contract, teams are not as willing to trade for someone who has been as inconsistent through his career as he has. Though the Nationals have tried to dangle him out there for teams such as the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins according to CBS Sports' Danny Knobler, there have been few nibbles.

There could be more interest for pitcher Chien-Ming Wang, who gave up two runs over seven innings in a rehab start for the Chiefs on Wednesday. His contract is similar to Lannan's, as Wang makes $4 million per year. The Nationals are trying to make something happen in the trade market for these two players, but they will only part with them if the price is right.

The Washington nationals have demoted starter John Lannan to AAA Syracuse to start this season, and as a result, Lannan has requited a trade. The Nationals organization has said they won't be trading Lannan, but that might just be posturing so as to keep his trade value high. One of the teams that has reportedly shown interest is the team the Nationals beat on opening day, the Chicago Cubs. According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs have had conversations about Lannan while dangling former Nat Marlon Byrd.

Still on the lookout for pitching help in particular, the Cubs, according to a major-league source, inquired again about Washington Nationals left-hander John Lannan, who asked for a trade after being sent to the minors this week when he lost the Nats’ fifth-starter job to Ross Detwiler.

The Cubs already had talked to the Nationals about lefty pitching, including Lannan and former Cub Tom Gorzelanny, the source said, with Cubs center fielder Marlon Byrd included in those discussions.

Lannan should have some value because he is an established major league pitcher and the team trading for him should know exactly what they are getting with him. Byrd might not be able to start for the Nationals right now, but he could provide some good depth in the outfield.

Both Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo and Nationals manager Davey Johnson have given similar responses to pitcher John Lannan's trade request: He's not going anywhere.

Speaking to reporters hours before the Nationals' game against the Chicago Cubs, Johnson said:

It's just a tough thing. We're not trading him, though. We're keeping him. He's a good big-league pitcher.

Rizzo responded similarly, saying:

I've known John Lannan a long time. He's an ultra competitive person. And he's frustrated and upset and mad. If he was any other way, I would wonder about him. This guy has been a solid contributor to this franchise for a long time. He's a good, solid starting pitcher in the big leagues. Unfortunately, it was a conversation that we had about a roster spot that we felt we had five guys better than him.

[snip]

I trust John Lannan is going to be an ultra-professional like he's been throughout his career in Washington. The last thing I told him was that you're going to help us in the big leagues this year, or you're going to help somebody in the big leagues this year. That was the final statement that I made to him.

Lannan emailed a number of reporters Wednesday night to say that he had requested a trade from Washington after the Nationals optioned him to AAA Syracuse Tuesday after the team's final exhibition game. Lannan had drawn what Rizzo described as "mild" interest in spring training, but potential trade partners have balked at Lannan's $5 million contract.

Meanwhile, Dave Sheinin of The Washington Post reports that Lannan has reported to Syracuse. The Sky Chiefs open their season Thursday against the Rochester Red Wings.

In the wake of John Lannan's trade request, there has been some speculation as to which team he might be traded.

However, if what Bill Ladson of MLB.com is reporting is correct, there's very little chance that a deal could be done anytime soon.

It's going to be hard to trade John Lannan. According to a baseball source, the #Nats has talked to at least 20 teams about Lannan. The Nationals have had conversations with the Angels, Orioles, Red Sox and Tigers. The Nationals, who want prospects or bench players in return, have not come close to making a deal for Lannan.
But here's the problem, a lot of teams do not want to deal with Lannan's $5 million salary and the Nationals are not willing to eat the salary. Rizzo already has said that he is not giving Lannan away. So the chances of Lannan being traded are slim - at best.

Lannan provides valuable rotation depth and had an option left when the Nationals sent him down (Ross Detwiler, Lannan's replacement, had none left). It's easy for the 27-year-old Lannan to believe that the Nats are jerking him around, but he has less of a leg to stand on when you consider that his highest ERA+ in his five years in Washington was 110 (back in 2008). And that's before you get to Lannan's unimpressive spring training this year (5.14 ERA, 1.43 WHIP in 21.0 innings pitched).

Regardless of how this turns out, this is a distraction that threatens to puncture what should be an optimistic start to the season for the Nationals.

I know everyone wants to ask me about yesterday's news, so I wanted to make sure I got back to you.

I am certainly disappointed in the Nationals' decision. I met with Mike Rizzo for the second time since I received the news to tell him exactly how I feel, and my agent has also spoken to Mike. I know what my rights and the team's rights are, and while I am still a member of the Washington Nationals organization, I let Mike know that I believe a trade would be the best solution for everyone in both the short and long term.

I believe that I belong in a big-league rotation. I am a proven major-league starting pitcher, with a track record of success.

I appreciate all the opportunities the Nationals organization has given me throughout the years. I've done a lot for this organization through some tough times. I anticipated on being part of the team's next exciting chapter. If the Nationals feel they don't need me or want me with the current make-up of the team, I can respect their decision. However, I'm very confident that I am capable of making a meaningful contribution to a major-league team.

This transaction will not change who I am or how I approach my business. I will continue to prepare myself for the season and look forward to the opportunity to pitch for a major-league team in the near future. I appreciate the space that you have given me over the past 24 hours. This will be the last time that I make any public comments on yesterday's transaction or my future with the Nationals' organization. My focus from here on out will be on playing the game that I love and demonstrating the professionalism that I have exhibited throughout my career. Thank you again for your patience since yesterday's announcement.

Lannan was a central figure in numerous trade rumors during spring training, with the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers rumored to have the most interest. Tuesday afternoon, during the Nationals' final spring training game, news broke that the Nationals planned to option Lannan to AAA Syracuse, a move that was made official after the game. Ross Detwiler will take Lannan's presumed slot in the starting rotation. The left-hander is slated to make $5 million this season.

Washington opens its 2012 season against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field Thursday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs. First pitch is scheduled for 2:20 p.m.
