Kerry Fraser worked as an NHL referee for 37 years before retiring in 2010. During that time he became widely known for two things: his amazingly coiffed and gelled hair, and missing Wayne Gretzky's high stick on Doug Gilmour in Game 6 of the 1993 Campbell Conference Finals. Fraser has continuously expressed his regret for missing the call, and his name is still cursed by Toronto Maple Leafs fans to this very day.

Fraser has since moved on to work for TSN in Canada, making controversial pronouncements on TV and online instead of in a referee's uniform. His latest ruling: that Joel Ward's series-winning goal for the Washington Capitals Wednesday night should not have counted.
Here's what Fraser had to say.

Mike Knuble was not pushed, shoved or fouled by a defending player so as to cause him to come into contact with Thomas. It matters not if the contact on Thomas by Knuble was deemed to be deliberate or incidental other than a minor penalty that might result. What matters most is that all the elements of rule 69.1 were violated and the goal should have been waved off.

Decisions of this magnitude are never popular but sometimes they just have to be made.

We grew up in New England, so it pained us deeply to see the racist tweets about Capitals playoff hero Joel Ward from certain alleged Bruins fans.

There's really not a whole lot to add to what others have said about them. They're nasty, unacceptable, disturbingly brazen, and on and on and on. The people who wrote those things deserve whatever bad things in life happen to them as a result.

But ...

We refuse to use the actions of an ignorant, sad few to condemn an entire city. Yes, Boston's track record of race relations isn't good. No city's is. And this isn't just an American problem, either. Remember this incident from preseason in Canada? It's not just a hockey problem, either. Spend enough time at European soccer matches and you'll hear things that make your blood run cold. Even a team photo can go horribly wrong if no one's there to say, "Hey, maybe this isn't a good idea."

Some people use sports as a template to express their real-world hatreds, racial, ethnic, or otherwise. Teams and clubs can try all the anti-racism initiatives they can, and some people will still be out there. That's just the sad fact.

UPDATED: Though it seems fairly obvious the Bruins have had nothing to do with this unpleasantness, the organization has issued a statement anyway.

The Bruins are very disappointed by the racist comments that were made following the game last night. These classless, ignorant views are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization.

The Washington Capitals earned a very surprising series win against the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night. Joel Ward squeaked a backhand by Tim Thomas in overtime to seal what has been the closest series in Stanley Cup Playoff history. Our Capitals blog Japers' Rink is just happy that the Game 7 monkey is finally off this team's back.

Nothing is as exciting as seeing your team win a series in overtime. Nothing. And Joel Ward made sure that the Caps' and their fans finally ended their Game 7 miseries when he picked up a rebound after a two-on-one with Mike Knuble, and made it count. A wee bit of interference by Knuble on Tim Thomas? Perhaps. But it's about time the karmic pendulum swung the Caps' way in that department, and it paid off big time. Your playoff hero: Joel Ward.

Wednesday was also the last time Joel Ward will ever have to pay for a drink in Washington. The Capitals now move on, and their next round opponent is not yet determined. Bot for now, just enjoy the moment.

This GIF sums up just about everything that's made this series so much fun for the neutral. There's been physical play, goalies sticking up for themselves, and a fair few attempts at gamesmanship and intimidation.

Our favorite part of this GIF is Holtby's ice-cold staredown of Rich Peverley as the Boston man rounds on him. It's less "I didn't do it," and more "Yeah, I did it, what do you want to do about it?"

Peverley's response: a good, old-fashioned fake slash, just to see if the young netminder blinks. For what it's worth, we didn't see one.
