The Washington Redskins released veteran tight end Chris Cooley on Tuesday, ending an eight-year relationship with their 2004 Draft pick.

The Washington Redskins have released their long-time tight end Chris Cooley, and the emotional news was broken by the nine-year veteran himself at the team's media center. Cooley was the Redskins' third-round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and will leave as the franchise's all-time leader in receptions at the tight end position (428).

The decision to release Cooley, said coach Mike Shanahan, who was at the press conference, was to allow him to earn a starting position some place else. The Redskins are slated to start Fred Davis and give converted tight end Niles Paul a shot at the backup role.

For the past few seasons, Cooley has battled injuries — he had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in the winter of '11, and also broke his finger, which led to him being placed on IR in the middle of last season -- but was reported healthy and ready-to-go for this season.

In his eight seasons with the Redskins, Cooley recorded 428 receptions for 4,703 yards and 33 touchdowns, becoming the most popular player on a series of poor teams.

The Redskins' newest kicker is Billy Cundiff, who replaces Graham Gano just a day after Gano appeared to have won the job when the team cut Neil Rackers.

The Redskins have once again made a roster move at the kicker spot, bringing in Billy Cundiff to handle placekicking duties while releasing Graham Gano, who has done the job for the team since 2009. Chris Russell of ESPN980 is reporting that Cundiff was signed on a one-year deal.

Monday, Gano appeared to have earned Washington's starting job for another season when the team opted to release veteran Neil Rackers rather than Gano as the team cut its roster down to 75 players. However, just up the parkway in Baltimore, the Ravens had let loose Cundiff, keeping undrafted rookie Justin Tucker, who went 5-for-5 in preseason including two 50-yarders.

That put Cundiff, a nine-year veteran who went to the Pro Bowl in 2010, on the market, and Redskins coaches apparently think Cundiff will make a good replacement for Gano. Cundiff has always been a consistent kicker, but found himself in the spotlight for the wrong reason earlier this year after missing a potential game-tying chip shot from 32 yards in the closing seconds of the AFC Championship game. Hopefully Cundiff has shaken off that moment and the disappointment of losing the Baltimore job to an unproven rookie and can be consistent for the Redskins this year.

Jammal Brown's hip injury that has kept the right tackle out of training camp required a surgery that will keep the Redskins without their starter for at least another month.

Brown aggravated a right hip that needed surgery two years ago while running sprints just before training camp. He had hoped to be able to avoid going under the knife - he took two cortizone shots - but it didn't help, and he underwent the surgery Thursday.

Brown is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, and that's without considering that the two-time Pro Bowler hans't taken snaps at all during training camp. Tyler Polumbus has been holding down the right side of the line as the Redskins prepare for the season, and he'll continue to play the spot for the foreseeable future as the former No. 13 pick recovers from his injury.

Kirk Cousins has a strong showing against the Bears to throw the backup QB question into play.

With the days shrinking until opening day, roster trim downs and depth chart rearrangements are close at hand. For the Washington Redskins, a few key positions remain close battles, including at some very visible positions.

The starting quarterback question in Washington is as simple as looking at the team's top draft pick, Robert Griffin III, however, his backup remains a question. Rookie quarterback Kirk Cousins' performance in the preseason has been encouraging for the Redskins, who have kept Rex Grossman at the No. 2 quarterback spot, but must be giving some weight to Cousins' strong performance thus far.

At wide receiver, the cut line has closed in on a few Redskins battling for spots on the depth chart come opening day. Wideout Dezmon Briscoe has impressed during preseason and camp action, including 51 yards and a touchdown in last week's game against the Bears. Briscoe's move up the depth chart could mean the end of roster hopes for receivers Brandon Banks and Anthony Armstrong.

Several players are practicing despite injury for the Washington Redskins

Three Washington Redskins players--safety Dejon Gomes, defensive lineman Kedric Golston and guard Kory Lichtensteiger--are practicing despite injury, according to Rich Campbell of the Washington Times.

DeJon Gomes wore a walking boot following Saturday's preseason contest with the Chicago Bears, however, he fully participated in practice Monday. Head coach Mike Shanahan believes he will be able to play in this week's game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Kedric Golston practiced in full, but he is still dealing with both a sore tricep and a sore elbow. Kory Lichtensteiger also participated in team drills but is still nursing a sore left knee.

Right tackle Jammal Brown is a different story as he remains out for the Redskins after received a cortisone shot in his left hip, his second of the offseason. Brown first hurt his hip during conditioning in late July.

Signing free agent defensive lineman Marlon Favorite adds some depth at the position for the Washington Redskins. Teams in the NFC East are going to need all the help they can get on the defensive interior, as all squads have been known to have solid running games in the past.

On Thursday, the Redskins announced the signing of Favorite, who is brought it to replace Chris Neild. Favorite went undrafted in 2009 and has spent time on practice squads for various teams. He's played for the Colts and Patriots among others.

Neild tore his ACL in practice on Monday, which obviously opened the door for Favorite. Read the official team press release here:

The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent defensive lineman Marlon Favorite. The signing fills the roster spot vacated by NT Chris Neild, who was waived-injured earlier in the week. Neild and WR Darius Hanks both cleared waivers and have now reverted to the team's Reserve/Injured list.

Favorite (6-1, 317) was originally signed as a college free agent by the Carolina Panthers on May 1, 2009. He spent portions of the 2009 season on the practice squads of the St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints. He spent part of the 2010 offseason with the Buffalo Bills before signing with the Indianapolis Colts on May 18, 2010. He was released by the Colts on Sept. 4 of that year. He was added to the New England Patriots' practice squad on Jan. 5, 2011, before being released by the Patriots on Aug. 5. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles three days later and was released by the Eagles on Aug. 26. He signed with the St. Louis Rams on Aug. 31 until being released on Sept. 3.

Favorite, 26, played collegiately at LSU, where he appeared in 40 games with 17 starts, totaling 78 tackles, 8.5 stops for a loss and 4.0 sacks. He was a member of the LSU squad that won the BCS National Championship following the 2007 season.

He attended West Jefferson H.S. in Harvey, La., earning First-Team All-American honors from USA Today and ranking as the nation's No. 1 defensive tackle prospect by ESPN.com during his senior season. He was born on June 22, 1986.
