The Big East will announce the hiring of a new commissioner today: Mike Aresco, who has long worked in college sports programming as a VP for CBS, will take the head job of a league in flux.

Georgetown's fluctuating conference has a new commissioner: reports indicate that Mike Aresco, a VP at CBS, will take over the job of college sports' most unstable conference.

Aresco's hiring was first reported by Mark Blaudschun and has since been confirmed by the AP as well as CBSSports.com. Aresco has worked with CBS since 1996 and has been responsible for college programming for the network, including negotiations with the NCAA for the men's basketball tournament as well as the networks' 15-year contract with the SEC.He'll take over for interim commissioner Joe Bailey III, who has been in charge since various member schools leaving the conference cost John Marinatto his job in May. The announcement on Aresco's hiring is expected to come later Tuesday afternoon.

That know-how will come in handy as the conference looks to begin negotiations on its TV deal in September. TV deals provide major cash for NCAA conferences, and the upcoming negotiations loom large for a conference set to lose Syracuse and Pittsburgh while adding unproven programs in Houston, Memphis, UCF, and SMU at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year.

ESPN college basketball analyst and attorney Jay Bilas is reportedly under "serious consideration" to become the new Big East commissioner.

The Big East Conference is still without a permanent commissioner, but may be narrowing down candidates for the job as of Monday. One candidate who is reportedly under "serious consideration" to become the new commissioner is ESPN college basketball analyst and attorney, Jay Bilas. Bilas's name did not come out of the blue, as Louisville Cardinals men's basketball coach Rick Pitino recommended Bilas for the job last month.

The Big East has seemingly suffered while operating with an interim commissioner (Joe Bailey) during the discussions over the college football playoff which would replace the BCS. The Big East has not yet worked out a contract to one of the former BCS bowls, though it used to have direct access as an automatically qualifying conference.

It may be no coincidence that this report about Bilas came out on the same day that the Big East retained Bevilacqua Helfant Ventures co-founder Chris Bevilacqua to be their lead negotiator in upcoming television rights negotiations. Bevilacqua recently negotiated contracts for the Rose Bowl and the Pac-12 Conference.

The Big East will enter an exclusive 60-day negotiation period with current TV partner ESPN on Sept. 1. The conference would like to have their permanent commissioner in place by that date. The Big East will be free to negotiate with other networks if no deal is reached at the end of the 60-day period.
