If you listened to the first edition of the SB Nation DC podcast last week, you would have heard Scott Jackson, Charles Walton, and myself discuss the curious decision by WUSA sportscaster Kristin Berset to wear a Chris Cooley jersey on the five o'clock news the day that the popular tight end was given his walking papers by the franchise.

If we're being charitable, Berset's decision was symbolic of the popular surprise and outcry at the team's decision. But then Cooley himself went on Friday's edition of the Mike Wise show on 106.7 The Fan to disabuse any Redskins fan who may have felt the inclination to throw a telethon for him.

The only part I'm having a hard time with right now is the pity party. It's not my funeral, I'm not dying, I'm OK. It's a business and I've understood that it's a business for a long time and I'm able to separate that. Where I become emotional is when the people involved in my life through the business tell me what I meant to them and tell me how they felt about me and stories that they shared with me. ... That's something that I'm not losing. That's what I think makes me more emotional.

Emotional stuff, indeed.

When newly acquired Washington Redskins cornerback Crezdon Butler takes the field Sunday in his team's season opener, it will complete a year-long recovery from an ankle injury that was not easy for the former Arizona Cardinal to overcome.

"It was very difficult," Butler told the Washington D.C. media Monday. "Playing the position I play, I need my speed. That was the first thing that went when I broke my ankle. I was like, man I don’t have speed no more. But I rehabbed and it took me a year to fully get back. I’m ready."

On Saturday, the Redskins signed the 6'0, 191-pound corner after he was cut by the Cardinals, a team he played just one game for after dislocating and tearing ligaments in his ankle during last year's season opener. The injury landed him on Arizona's injured reserve list.

Gamble (6-2, 255) was originally signed by the San Diego Chargers as a college free agent on July 26, 2011, and appeared in five games with the Chargers last season.
The Redskins put in waiver claims on two offensive linemen, but lost out on both.

The Washington Redskins are trying to add some more competition and depth to their offensive line, according to realredskins.com.

With the Redskins' season less than a week away, the organization was looking to bring in some new faces, including center Cody Wallace and guard Shelley Smith. Washington put in waiver claims on both but ultimately lost out to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and St. Louis Rams respectively due to the waiver order.

Smith was particularly enticing to many teams after he was cut by the Houston Texans. Smith is believed by many to be starting caliber or at the very least, a capable backup who can step in for a period of time.

Washington is carrying nine offensive lineman and likely would've had to part ways with a pair of them had the waiver claims gone through. It will be a situation to watch in the nation's capital should some other lineman hit the market.

After an active NFL Cut Day on Friday, the Washington Redskins were left with just 52 men on their roster, one short of the league's maximum of 53 players.

On Saturday, head coach Mike Shanahan announced the addition of that final player, cornerback Crezdon Butler.

Butler played his college ball at Clemson, and was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Due to injury, he has played in just five games in the NFL since being drafted, but if healthy should add depth to a Washington secondary a bit depleted after the loss of safety Tanard Jackson, who was suspended for a year by the NFL on Friday.

The Washington Redskins officially released their list of cuts and other roster moves shortly after 9 p.m. Friday night. The team had until that hour to trim their active roster to a maximum 53 players.

The following players were waived:

WR Anthony Armstrong, WR Terrence Austin, DB Travon Bellamy, FB Dorson Boyce (injured), T Tom Compton, C Erik Cook, QB Jonathan Crompton, RB Tristan Davis (injured), NT Marlon Favorite, C Grant Garner, LB Donnell Holt, NT Delvin Johnson, LB Brian McNally (Waived with injury settlement), TE Richard Quinn, T Willie Smith, CB Brandyn Thompson, LB Markus White, and DE Doug Worthington.

The following players were released:

RB Tim Hightower, CB David Jones, LB Bryan Kehl, and DL Darrion Scott.

DE Kentwan Balmer was placed on the Reserve/Left Squad list.

Safety Tanard Jackson was placed on the Reserve/Suspended list. The NFL announced Friday that Jackson had been suspended indefinitely for a third violation of the league's substance abuse policy. That decision means that the Redskins currently have 52 players on their active roster.

NFL players become eligible for the practice squad Saturday at noon.

This unofficially brings the active roster down to 53, though more moves may be executed before the 9 p.m. deadline.
