The Navy Midshipmen opened the 2012 season with a disappointing 50-10 loss to Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday morning. The Irish overwhelmed Navy in the first half, jumping out to 27-3 lead. The Irish defense impressively bottled up the triple option attack of Navy, getting stops when they needed and forcing turnovers to allow just one touchdown.

Navy quarterback Trey Miller did hit 14 of 19 passing attempts in the air, as Ken Niumatalolo tried to get something going on the offensive side of the ball. Navy averaged less than three yards per carry. The game was put away when Navy was driving into the red zone but Miller botched things up running to his right. The ball popped into the air and the massive Stephon Tuitt scooped it up and dashed nearly 80 yards the other way for a touchdown. The play swung the game and the lead to 27-0, deflating the Midshipmen as they entered the locker room.

The Irish defense kept up the pressure in the second half, getting fast to the option and hitting hard. Miller did hit Shawn Lynch for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the first minute of the half but that would be it for Navy as the Irish salted things away.

Navy will regroup now and try to get things together for next week's matchup against Penn State.

The luck of the Irish has been with Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland, as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lead the Navy Midshipmen 27-3 at halftime.

Notre Dame has been powered by an excellent running game, with 158 rushing yards on just 20 carries, good for 7.8 yards per carry. Theo Reddick has a team-high 14 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown, while George Atkinson III has added 75 yards of his own on just four carries.

Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, filling in for suspended quarterback Tommy Rees, is 6-of-10 passing for 74 yards, with a touchdown and an interception each to his name.

Navy's rushing game has been stifled by Notre Dame's defense, as the Midshipmen have gained just 84 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Trey Miller, at the helm of Navy's option offense, leads the team with 15 carries, but has gained just 18 yards.

Miller, though, is 10-of-12 passing for 113 yards.

Notre Dame's defense has forced two turnovers -- both fumbles. Stephon Tuitt picked up a Trey Miller fumble and returned it 77 yards for a Notre Dame touchdown, giving Norte Dame a commanding 27-0 lead late in the second quarter.

Nick Sloan added a field goal for Navy as time expired in the first half.

The Navy Midshipmen open the season Saturday morning with a clash against Notre Dame in Dublin.

The Navy Midshipmen open the 2012 season bright and early on Saturday morning with a season-opening clash against Notre Dame in Dublin. The teams traveled to Ireland late in the week to try and get accustomed to the time change, and kick off from Aviva Stadium is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET.

The Midshipmen and Irish played in Dublin in 1996 but the response and attendance was mediocre. This year, there's expected to be a near capacity crowd with many ND faithful and subway alums making the trek overseas. The Irish will be without some key players due to offseason mishaps. Tommy Rees, Cierre Wood, and Carlo Calabrese are a few of the big names who will be out for the Irish. Notre Dame is currently favored by 14.5 points, a large spread given the missing players and the recent struggles against Navy's option attack.

CBS will carry the early morning broadcast beginning at 9 a.m. ET. Verne Lundquist will have the call, with his patented chortle ready to ring in the season early Saturday .
