The Virginia Cavaliers kicked off their 2012 season in style, crushing the overmatched Richmond Spiders 43-19 in Charlottesville on Saturday. Despite the dominant victory, the win revealed some flaws for the Cavaliers, which need to be addresses moving forward for the team to succeed. The gang over at SB Nation's Cavaliers blog Streaking the Lawn, have more details:

The low-point of the game: UVA's performance in the trenches. The defensive line got beat badly by the Spiders on their two quick-strike touchdown drives and failed to get consistant pressure on Richmond's quarterbacks. The offensive line could never seem to get a good push against an undersized UR front, notably failing to get Kevin Parks a yard on 4th and 1. There are explanations: Richmond's short-passing game neutralized our pass rush (but didn't allow the Spiders the chance for needed game-changing plays). Their loading up the box on defense neutralized the UVA running game at times (while allowing Rocco to throw over their heads). Still, in a game against inferior competition, I expect the Hoos to dominate the trenches, and they didn't. I would like to see improvement from both units, and I expect that we will see it.

Virginia will host the Penn State Nittany Lions next Saturday. Penn State was upset 24-14 by Ohio in Happy Valley on Saturday.

The Virginia Cavaliers had little trouble in their 2012 season opener on Sunday, destroying the Richmond Spiders 43-19 in Charlottesville, VA. UVA jumped out to a 16-0 lead seven minutes into the game and never looked back, rolling up 545 yards of offense in the dominant performance.

Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco had an outstanding day, throwing for 311 yards and a touchdown on 25 of 37 passing. Three Cavaliers running backs found the endzone on Saturday, with Perry Jones, Khalek Shepherd and Kevin Parks all topping 50 yards on the ground and scoring. As a team, Virginia ran for 184 yards on 42 carries.

The overmatched Spiders, who had negative rushing yards in the first half, finished up with just 28 yards on 21 carries, good for a 1.3 yard per carry average. Richmond had just three more yards on the ground than they did in penalty yardage (three penalties for 25 yards).

Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco was 14-23 in the first half, for 201 yards and a touchdown. Perry Jones has led the way on the ground for the Cavaliers, gaining 44 yards on eight carries, with fellow backfield mate Kevin Parks chipping in 32 yards and a rushing touchdown. Darius Jennings has been the beneficiary of Rocco's strong first half, catching four balls for 79 yards and a touchdown.

The Virginia Cavaliers kickoff the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1, as they play host to the Richmond Spiders.

The Virginia Cavaliers kickoff the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1, as they play host to the Richmond Spiders.

Virginia will look to build on a moderately successful 2011 campaign. It was a season in which the Cavaliers went 8-4 in the regular season, earning a bid to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Unfortunately, Virginia lost to Auburn 43-24 in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, ending the season on a sour note.

Richmond is easily the weakest of Virginia's non-conference opponents in 2012. The Cavaliers will also face Penn St., Louisiana Tech, and TCU out of ACC play this season.

2012 will be the third season for Mike London as head coach of the Cavaliers. Prior to being hired at Virginia, London was the head coach at Richmond -- where he won the FCS Championship in 2008, going 13-3 en route to winning the title.

London was named the ACC coach of the year in 2011, as London's Cavaliers pulled off a number of upsets.
