Virginia Tech lost a starting receiver Monday night, as the knee injury D.J. Coles suffered will apparently end his season.

D.J. Coles was set to have the biggest year of his Virginia Tech career, but it's likely over after one game as another right knee injury will apparently end his season.

Coles was hurt in the first quarter of Virginia Tech's season opener against Georgia Tech Monday night. The senior exited the game and did not return. He had just been cleared for practice two weeks earlier after offseason PCL surgery on the same knee, but the injuries are apparently not related. Next in line for the Hokies is fifth-year senior Corey Fuller, who had a career-high five catches after Coles' injury in the Hokies' 20-17 overtime win.

Coles was expected to start at one wide receiver spot after starting three games last season and impressing with 116 yards in the ACC Championship Game. He will likely be able to return for another season should he want to, as he would probably be granted a medical redshirt after playing in less than 30 percent of his team's games on the year. Coles did not record any receptions in his brief time on the field against Georgia Tech.

Virginia Tech blog Gobbler Country was excited -- but not necessarily pleased -- with Virginia Tech's overtime win against Georgia Tech

Virginia Tech's season-opening win against divisional rival Georgia Tech wasn't exciting from start to finish, but it certainly peaked at the right time: after almost an hour of sluggish, uninspiring offenses trying to punt their way to victory, both teams began to score as the game entered its final minutes. The teams traded scores late with the No. 16 Hokies capitalizing on a late field goal and turnover in overtime to win.

Hokies blog Gobbler Country referred to the team's evening as "playing with their food", but still enjoyed the thriller:

Well, what can I really say? If you weren't watching; 1. nothing I say is going to sufficiently sum it up for you, and 2. shame on you.

The result?

It's a win. A very, very, very sloppy and ugly one, but it's a win.

The site's biggest criticism was perennially conservative playcalling that saw Frank Beamer's squad allow the Yellow Jackets to hang around and even take the lead in the final minute despite an all-around great defensive performance that stymied a troublesome triple option attack.

This is the kind of performance by our coaching staff that I thought we had moved past. You can't punt the ball from inside an opponent's 35-yard line. You can't run wide receiver screens all day. You can't call terrible plays in relation to the situation you're facing. We did all three tonight, and often.

After leading a courageous comeback, Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington's fatal mistake cost his team in Lane Stadium's first-ever overtime game as they were defeated by Virginia Tech, 20-17.

On a 3rd-and-6 at the Virginia Tech 10 yard line, Washington tried to extend a broken play, rolled out and lofted a pass into the endzone that was intercepted by Hokies defensive back Kyle Fuller. Virginia Tech then needed only a field goal, which Cody Journell converted to win the game for No. 16-ranked Virginia Tech.

After a defensive battle for the first three quarters, it was an offensive back-and-forth that ultimately decided the game. The Virginia Tech offense came to life first, scoring on a 42-yard pass from Logan Thomas to freshman Demitri Knowles, the first reception of his career, to put the Hokies on top, 14-10.

Georgia Tech answered, methodically driving down the field 72 yards in just over seven minutes to take a 17-14 lead with only 0:44 left on a Deon Hill touchdown reception from quarterback Tevin Washington. Washington converted a fourth down during the go-ahead drive, rolling out and finding B.J. Bostic for a 19-yard gain.

Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas then mounted a courageous drive of his own, driving 51 yards in under a minute to set kicker Journell up for a 41-yard field goal to tie the game, 17-17.

Logan Thomas finished the game completing 21-for-38 passes for 230 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Yellow Jackets quarterback Tevin Washington finished 10-for-15, 96 yards, one touchdown and one interception along with 63 yards rushing.

No. 16 Virginia Tech now takes a 1-0 record into their next matchup with Austin Peay. Georgia Tech will face Presbyterian.

A last-second field goal from Virginia Tech kicker Cody Journell tied the game, 17-17, and pushed this season-opening battle into overtime.

Hokie quarterback Logan Thomas drove his offense down the field with only 0:44 remaining to set up Cody Journell with the game-tying field goal.

In what was a defensive battle, the Virginia Tech offense finally came to life midway through the fourth quarter. With around nine minutes remaining in the game, Hokies wide reciever Marcus Davis caught a pass from Thomas and worked his way down the field for a 35-yard gain.

Although Davis had to leave the game with injury on the play, his replacement, Demitri Knowles, caught a 42-yard pass in the endzone on the following play, his first career reception, to put Virginia Tech ahead 14-10.

Georgia Tech then answered. On a 13-play, 72-yard drive that took just over seven minutes and included a scrambling 19-yard pass on a fourth down, the Yellow Jackets took the lead on a Deon Hill 10-yard reception from Tevin Washington with 0:44 remaining. Washington, through the air and on the ground, accounted for 64 of the drive's 72 yards.

Virginia Tech wide receiver Marcus Davis was slow to get up and had to be helped to his feet by trainers following a 35-yard reception from quarterback Logan Thomas. He left the game with an apparent shoulder injury.

Davis caught a pass from Thomas on a slant, avoided a tackle and zig-zagged his way down the field for a big gain for the Hokies, but came down awkwardly when he was tackled. Davis fumbled on the play, but the ball was recovered by a Virginia Tech teammate. Davis laid on his back momentarily. When he was helped to his feet by trainers, he stood for a second, composed himself, then ran off the field.

Davis' replacement, Demitri Knowles, caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from Thomas on the following play. Virginia Tech now trails Georgia Tech, 17-14.

Davis had six catches for 82 yards before exiting with the injury.

The battle of anemic offenses continued Monday night with a scoreless third quarter and the game still tied, 7-7.

Georgia Tech received the kickoff to start the second half then drove to midfield. However, the drive stalled when Yellow Jacket running back B.J. Bostic could not convert a 4th and 1, turning the ball over on downs.

After three consecutive 3-and-outs, two by Virginia Tech and one by Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets finally got their triple-option offense on track, moving the ball into Hokie territory behind the rushing attack of quarterback Tevin Washington and running backs David Sims, Orwin Smith and B.J. Bostic, and were settling for a 37-yard field goal attempt when the quarter ended.

Georgia Tech has now rushed for 140 yards against the Virginia Tech defense, and has been limited to only 52 yards passing. Virginia Tech has added only 130 total yards of their own, with 90 passing and 40 rushing.

Virginia Tech freshman punter A.J. Hughes botched the snap on a punt just before the end of the first quarter, and Georgia Tech wasted little time capitalizing, scoring just two plays later on a Robert Godhigh 12-yard run to tie the game at 7-7.

Following the Godhigh touchdown was 14 scoreless minutes that involved three punts from each team and zero true scoring threats, leading the Hokies and Yellow Jackets to enter halftime tied.

In this defensive battle, Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas has stood out as a playmaker, passing for 90 yards and a touchdown and adding 40 rushing yards on eight carries. Wide receiver Marcus Davis has four receptions for 48 yards. Tight end Eric Martin has the only score for the Hokies, a 5-yard touchdown reception.

Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington is 4-for-7 for 52 yards, with every completed pass going to running back Orwin Smith.

Virginia Tech wide receiver D.J. Coles has left Monday's game with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and will not return.

Coles, a senior, had 36 catches for 480 yards and three touchdowns in 2011, but underwent offseason PCL surgery. His injury is not related to that surgery, according to the official team Twitter account. He has caught passes in 15 games for Virginia Tech throughout his collegiate career.

Coles did not have a reception before leaving Monday night's contest. Quarterback Logan Thomas has instead turned his focus to wide receivers Marcus Davis and Corey Fuller. Davis leads the team thus far with four receptions for 48 yards and one touchdown. Fuller has two receptions for 25 yards.

Coles exited in the second quarter with his team tied 7-7 and with his offense stalling on three consecutive drives.
