The Virginia Cavaliers suffered a blowout loss, 56-20, to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlanta on Saturday, but that result may be more of an outlier in the big picture, rather than a predictor of of the future. The Cavaliers were dominated on both sides of the ball, but in the end it just counts as one loss.

Brian Schwartz of SB Nation's Steaking the Lawn tried to calm the masses and put the loss into perspective:

Before we bother talking about the game, I want to try to head off any "SKY IS FALLING" comments, surely unsuccessfully. Coaches always stress having "high highs and low lows." Thankfully, we haven't had to worry about those highs this year. However, this game doesn't change my opinion of this year's team - it isn't great, but it is good and will win plenty of games this year. We're playing an inexperienced team, which was bound to put up a stinker somewhere. I don't mean to minimize how colossally terrible this game was; I just don't think we can project this performance on the rest of the season.

The loss drops the Cavaliers to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in ACC conference play. Virginia will have a chance at a quality win on the road next Saturday when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on the TCU Horned Frogs. TCU is in their inaugural season as a member of the Big 12, and introduced themselves to the league with a victory over Kansas on Saturday.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were absolutely dominant, pounding the Virginia Cavaliers 56-20 on Saturday afternoon at Bobbie Dodd Stadium.

Virginia was overwhelmed from the outset on the road, falling behind 21-7 after first quarter and trailing 35-7 at the half.

The Cavaliers' defense was helpless against the Yellow Jackets option. Paul Johnson's team ran all over Virginia, amassing 470 yards on 48 attempts.

Running back Orwin Smith seemed unstoppable, gaining 137 yards on just six carries while scoring once on a 77-yard touchdown foray.

Tevin Washington was superb as well, throwing for 125 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 93 yards and scoring three more times.

Offensively, the Cavaliers weren't much more successful. Michael Rocco was average, completing 16-of-26 for 147 yards while throwing for one touchdown and two interceptions.

It was a tough loss for Virginia in its ACC opener after winning its first two games against the Richmond Spiders and Penn State Nittany Lions.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are putting a beating on the Virginia Cavaliers, leading 35-7 at halftime in Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday.

The difference in the contest has been the rushing attack of Paul Johnson's team. The Yellow Jackets have used the option to perfection, racking up 277 yards on just 29 attempts.

It's been a day of big plays for Georgia Tech against this Cavaliers defense. The first touchdown was on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Tevin Washington to Zach Laskey. The second score was courtesy of a Orwin Smith 77-yard scamper.

Washington has proven to be a dual-threat on the afternoon, throwing for 110 yards and running for 81.

Michael Rocco has been somewhat of a bright spot thus far for Virginia, completing 10-of-16 for 92 yards and a touchdown toss to Jake McGee.

The return game for the Cavaliers has also been promising. Khalek Shepherd amassed 97 yards on two kick returns including a 72-yard beauty.

The Virginia Cavaliers travel to Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

The Virginia Cavaliers are set to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Virginia is undefeated coming into the affair after narrowly escaping 17-16 against the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Cavaliers were vastly outplayed for a majority of the game but ultimately were bailed out by Sam Ficken missing four field goals and an extra point.

One bright spot in the ugly win was quarterback Michael Rocco, who was 21-of-33 on the afternoon for 258 yards and two touchdowns. Jake McGee also had a solid day, with four catches for 99 yards and a score.

Georgia Tech has looked very formidable early despite losing their opener against the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Yellow Jackets had a 17-14 lead with under a minute to play but couldn't hold on, ultimately losing in overtime.

However, Paul Johnson's team bounced back in a major way last week, pummeling the Presbyterian Blue Hose 59-3 at home. Amazingly, Georgia Tech amassed 712 total yards, including 469 on the ground.
