The NFL has fined Washington Redskins offensive coordinator for berating referees during Sunday's game.

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was fined $25,000 for abrasively confronting the officials last Sunday during a loss to the Bengals, according to Adam Schefter. Shanahan verbally accosted a referee towards the end of the game, drawing a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He also continued to follow the referees into the tunnel after the conclusion of the game. It was expected that Shanahan would be fined by the league, particularly after Broncos coaches John Fox ($30,000) and Jack Del Rio ($25,000) were handed comparable fines earlier in the week.

The league had sent out a memo to coaches prior to Week 3, requesting that they improve their sideline decorum and not be so aggressively confrontational with the replacement referees. Shanahan was told Monday that he would have his actions reviewed, and he issued an apology stating, "I conducted myself in the wrong way."

Shanahan, the son of head coach Mike Shanahan, is the first coach to get dinged for his actions in Week 3. But he likely won't be the last, as Schefter also reported that it's expected Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will be fined for grabbing an official at the end of Sunday night's loss in Baltimore.

The Redskins 38-31 loss to Cincinnati was a back-and-forth battle which resulted in plenty of excitement and frustration for Redskins fans.

Plenty of community members at SB Nation's Redskins blog Hogs Haven were quick to blame the defense for the loss, but reactions ranged. Hogs Haven author Tiller56 summed up the loss saying the Redskins are exactly what some feared they would be.

Some community members are predicting doom and gloom just three weeks into the season.

Sooooooo....

Oline sucks. Secondary sucks. No draft picks, no money to attract top talent for the next 2 years at least. I thought Hall was supposed to be in the slot. Apparently someone told him he can still cover #1 receivers. Yeah right. RG3 still looks legit. He drove his team down the field when the line gave him time. It’s something you want to see out of him now, not in a couple of years. Someone has to tell me how we go from 1st and 10 to 3rd and 45 in a matter of seconds. Who had that 15 yard penalty? We won’t be able to contend before at least 4 years.

Rant time!!!

Redskins players are dropping like flies. Polumbus & Black are going to get RG3 killed. The pass rush was not existent in the 2nd half. The entire 2ndary played like they were practice squad players. No WR could create separation at the minimal times RG3 had time in the pocket. 3rd & long will doom this defense. Hall covering the QB while Gomes covering AJ Green was priceless.

Not only did the Washington Redskins lose their home opener to the Cincinnati Bengals, 38-31, on Sunday, but they were hit with a number of injuries as well. Cornerback Cedric Griffin, left tackle Trent Williams and running backs Evan Royster and Roy Helu all suffered injuries in the loss.

When speaking to the media on Monday, head coach Mike Shanahan provided some insight on the extent of the injuries. Shanahan confirmed that Williams had suffered a bone bruise on his right knee. The left tackle was injured early in the first quarter and tried to return multiple times before finally staying out of the game in the third quarter.

Griffin's injury was to his hamstring, Royster strained his patella tendon and Helu was battling a nagging turf toe injury, all three of which were classified as day-to-day issues.

The Redskins will try to rebound from consecutive losses when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Sept. 30 at 4:25 p.m. ET.

Washington Redskins' offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has issued a a statement after he erupted in an argument with replacement officials after Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

In a statement issued through the team, Shanahan said:

"I was frustrated, and in the process of trying to get some answers from the officials, I conducted myself in the wrong way. I ask our plays to hold themselves to a high standard and be accountable and I know that I'm accountable for my actions as well.

Shanahan, the son of head coach Mike Shanahan, was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the closing moments of the Redskins' 38-31 loss to the Bengals and was in a heated argument with the officials. Shanahan was seen after the game running to catch up with one of the officials as he continued to yell and argue.

The NFL will be reviewing Shanahan's conduct to determine if he will be fined or suspended for his conduct.

The Redskins loss to the Bengals came down to one thing: The defense simply allowed too many big plays. See what players and coaches said in the aftermath of a 38-31 loss to Cincinnati.

LANDOVER,Md - It took just one play for the 80,000 burgundy-and-gold clad fans at FedEx Field to realize the Washington Redskins defense could be in for a long afternoon against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

On the first play from scrimmage, the Bengals scored on a 73-yard touchdown pass from Mohamed Sanu to A.J. Green to give Cincinnati the early lead. It was a play that reflected an alarming trend on the afternoon: The Redskins defense - a unit considered to be the team's best before the season - is allowing too many big plays.

"I thought the defense was going to be a strength of our football team," Mike Shanahan said of Jim Haslett's beleaguered group.

Whether it was the game's opening play, Armon Binns' 48-yard catch-and-run score down the left sideline, or Andrew Hawkins backbreaking 59-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Redskins defense wasn't able to stop explosive plays, and it was a shared sentiment in the Redskins post-game locker room.

"You can't give up big plays in this league and win football games," defensive lineman Kedric Golson said. "Defense is simple, whether you play a 3-4 [defensive front] for a 4-3. You gotta be fast, you gotta be physical and you gotta tackle."

"This [game] was disappointing," second-year linebacker Ryan Kerrigan added, "because we knew coming into the game we needed to eliminate the big plays as defense, and right off the bat they had a big play. You can't have those happen, those are killers."

Sunday's performance capped a tumultuous week for Washington's defense. It began last Sunday with a poor performance against the St. Louis Rams, where the team allowed 31 points to a perceived underdog. They then suffered a major blow when it was announced that starters Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker would be out for the season due to injury. Lastly, rumors swirled about a possible rift within the defensive staff, claims that were flatly denied both players and coaches.

But life won't get any easier for the Redskins defense this week, as a second consecutive poor outing will draw even more criticism towards a unit that most expected would would be a clear strength, rather than a glaring weakness.

"[This is] extremely frustrating," linebacker and defensive captain London Fletcher said. "Defensively, we thought we were a better unit."

The numbers show that, through three games, they aren't better. Through Week 3, the Redskins defense has allowed 101 points, fourth most in the NFL. They're now 30th in the league in total defense, and 31st against the pass. But even more sobering than the defensive statistics is the fact that Redskins have actually scored more than any team so far in 2012, and yet still enter Week 4 as a struggling 1-2 team looking for answers.

"Right now, we haven't performed to [at a high] level, especially in the last two games," Fletcher said."The offense has given us more than enough points to win those games."

Moving forward, the Redskins players and coaches say execution -- not scheme --is the issue, and that they must regroup in order stop the team's losing streak at two.

"We need to tighten up and make some plays out there," said Lorenzo Alexander. "I don’t know what it is, but we need to go back to the drawing board and figure out what we do well, stick to that and really try to go out and dominate teams from here on out."

"We are going to have to buckle up a little bit and we'll come back," Shanahan added. "We will do everything in our power to play our best football game and I know our guys will do it. I believe in these guys."

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will have his behavior reviewed by the NFL after verbally accosting the officials who called his team's game against the Cincinnati Bengals after the game.

After a contentious argument resulted in Shanahan, the son of head coach Mike Shanahan, being charged with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty with seven seconds left, Shanahan followed the referees into the tunnel. There, he expressed his displeasure:

ESPN 980 reported that Shanahan said: "You have no (expletive) balls, you are a (expetiving expletive.)"

The replacement referees in charge of the game had badly mishandled the final few seconds of play, initially incorrectly assessing the Redskins with a 10-second runoff that would have ended the game before correcting themselves. Shanahan initially argued with the referees while trying to get them to make the correction, but something he said triggered the unsportmanlike conduct penalty, which was then marked out as a 20-yard penalty instead of only 15 yards.

Shanahan will probably face a fine as the league tries to protect the officials refereeing games until the regular referees return from a strike.

The Washington Redskins were riding high after beating the New Orleans Saints two weeks ago, but a pair of losses later and the fanbase's optimism is tempered.

Redskins fans are obviously still excited about Robert Griffin III, who threw for 221 yards while leading the team in rushing, but the team's offense wasn't enough as the defense gave up 38 points to the Cincinnati Bengals. Redskins blog Hogs Haven had more negatives then positives to take away from the home opener.

The secondary allowed Dalton to throw for 328 yards and three touchdowns, and that's not including the 73-yard touchdown thrown by receiver Mohamed Sanu on a trick play for the Bengals' first touchdown.

For the third week in a row we allowed an opposing quarterback to carve up our secondary like a Thanksgiving turkey. So far on this young season, the Redskins defense has allowed 101 points, 955 passing yards and 10 passing touchdowns. This is not acceptable!

The Redskins might do better next week against Josh Freeman, who completed 10 of 28 passes and threw a pick this past weekend against Dallas.

The Washington Redskins' starting left tackle Trent Williams will have an MRI Monday after hurting his right knee early in the team's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday.

Williams, the team's most prominent offensive lineman, re-entered the game after hurting his knee on the team's first offensive series, but left again in the second half. Williams reported that while he was fine moving to his left, he had trouble going to the right, and that he left the game for "precautionary reasons." It's unclear how serious the injury is to the man responsible for protecting Robert Griffin III, although Williams clearly felt comfortable allowing himself to continue playing at least temporarily in the game Sunday.

Evan Royster, who seemed like a candidate for a starting tailback position in training camp, sprained his knee in the fourth quarter and did not return. He only has five carries on the season behind Albert Morris.

A pair of Redskins backup cornerbacks also left the game Sunday, both with hurt hamstrings: Cedric Griffin is listed as a backup to DeAngelo Hall, while Crezdon Butler is a third-stringer.
