Michael Ryder scored on a point-blank shot right in front of the crease, beating Semyon Varlamov to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 19:32 of the first period. Patrice Bergeron faked a slap shot at the top of the point and made the pass to Ryder, who slid it past Varlamov. It was the first power play goal that the Capitals have surrendered this season, ending their perfect 25-for-25 streak to start the year.
