Capitals Vs. Devils: Caps Open The Floodgates In The Second Period

Nothing like a pair of Alex Ovechkin goals to get the crowd into the game. Ovechkin netted his first of the season 14:31 into the second period to put the Caps up 3-2. Then, he notched his second on a penalty shot with a nifty move around Marty Brodeur to put Washington up 5-2 over the Devils. A Jason Chimera goal right out of the penalty box was sandwiched in between the Ovechkin goals as the Capitals atoned for a sluggish first period with a four goal outburst.

Tomas Fleischmann got the scoring going in the second stanza with a goal from the circle to tie the game at two. Alex Semin fed him a pass from behind the net and Fleischmann wasted no time in burying the puck on Brodeur's right side. Fleischmann also had an assist on Chimera's goal.

Brodeur has struggled for the second straight game as the Caps have poured on 20 shots thus far. Meanwhile opposing goalie Michal Neuvirth has played well, stopping 25 of 27 New Jersey shots.

John Carlson had a pair of assists in the period, giving him three points on the night; his first ever multi-point game. The young Capitals defenseman has looked impressive paired with fellow young defender, Karl Alzner.

Notes: Devils D Anton Volchenkov will not return after breaking his nose while blocking a Nicklas Backstrom slap shot.
