The Capitals played much better in the second period. It may not show on the scoreboard, but at least they didn't give up another three goals. They only gave up one, and despite outshooting their opponents 22-21, the Capitals now trail the Thrashers by a score of 4-0.
Washington had two great chances in the first five minutes of the second period, but the visitors could not find the back of the net. Matt Bradley rushed a shot just wide of an open net after the Capitals had managed to draw Ondrej Pavelec away from the goal mouth. Mere minutes later, Mike Knuble blasted a one-time shot off the post after being set up by Alex Ovechkin.
Where the Capitals continue to come up short, the Thrashers have been incredibly efficient in front of the net. Defenseman Dustin Byfuglien powered a shot through a screen and past Michal Neuvirth for the all-important fourth tally of the night. Evander King earned his third point of the night with the assist.
