Capitals Defensemen Tom Poti Has A Lot Of Allergies

New, 1 comment

There are so many athletes participating in professional sports that there will naturally be a few who have overcome different health issues to get to where they are. There are a handful of diabetics playing professional sports, for example. But it's safe to say that nobody really has a situation as unique as Capitals defensemen Tom Poti.

As Joseph White of the AP reports, Poti has a lot of allergies, which isn't remarkable on its own ... until you consider just how many things he cannot eat. Seriously, look at this list:

↵↵No nuts. No chocolate. No fish. Nothing from the ocean. No MSG. Most spices and sauces are verboten. Everything he eats has to be cooked in separate, clean utensils.

Poti said he can have meat that isn't fish -- as long as it's completely plain. No ketchup, no mustard, no sauce, nothing. Every time the team travels, the flight attendants are given a list of things Poti cannot eat. When he goes out to a restaurant, he needs to personally speak to the chef to make sure his dish is prepared correctly. Poti's allergies are so bad that he has to be tested for them one at a time, because testing for all of them caused him to "almost die," according to Poti. (Note: I'm sure he's slightly exaggerating).

And yet, he's still playing hockey on its highest level. That deserves a round of applause.
