The Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning staged a regular-season classic at the Verizon Center, and the Washington Capitals held on for a win in a shootout. The Capitals held off two Lightning power plays in overtime and won it in the shootout, thanks to goals from Matt Hendricks and Alexander Semin.
Tomas Vokoun stoned the Lightning with the game on the line, both in the shootout and the overtime. Vokoun had a shaky game overall, allowing multiple soft goals, including the go-ahead goal in regulation, but stepped up in overtime. The Capitals were called for two penalties -- one on Semin, and one for too many men on the ice -- and they needed their goalie to step up to hang on. Vokoun did and the Capitals won because of it.
Jason Chimera scored two goals for Washington, including the game-tying goal with 2:44 remaining in regulation.
