Capitals Vs. Penguins: Evgeni Malkin Will Not Play Against Caps, According To Reports

Via The Washington Times' Stephen Whyno, multiple reports from Pittsburgh indicate that Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin will not play Thursday against the Washington Capitals.

Malkin left Saturday's 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames with what has been called a "lower-body injury." Malkin has not played since, missing Sunday's 2-1 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers and Tuesday's 4-2 home-opening win over the Florida Panthers.

Head coach Dan Bylsma said Tuesday that Malkin's injury is not thought to be anything long-term. It is reportedly unrelated to the ACL tear he suffered February 4 that kept him out for the rest of the season.

The Capitals are also dealing with a lower-body injury; goaltender Michal Neuvirth missed practice Wednesday and his status for Thursday's game is uncertain. Washington, however, recalled goalie Braden Holtby from AHL Hershey, which could shed some light on the severity of Neuvirth's injury.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
