Capitals Vs. Avalanche: Cody McLeod's Fluke Goal Gives Colorado 1-0 Lead

After blanking the Winnipeg Jets Thursday, Michal Neuvirth's shutout streak only lasted about three minutes into the first period.

Cody McLeod's fluke goal beat Neuvirth as the Colorado Avalanche lead the Washington Capitals 1-0 after 20 minutes.

McLeod's goal was nothing more than an innocent dump into the zone that turned into his first goal since mid-March. Shane O'Brien started the break out of the Avalanche's defensive zone and found McLeod along the left boards. McLeod then charged ahead and got a shot off even while smothered by John Carlson. The puck hung in the air and Neuvirth put his glove up, but the puck lofted over it and into the top corner of the net at 2:49.

The Caps had 11 shots on goal to the Avalanche's nine, but Jean-Sebastien Giguere was solid in goal and stopped all of them. A Washington power play at the end of the period was fruitless.
