Capitals To Honor Hall Of Fame Inductee Dino Ciccarelli Tonight

New, 1 comment

Tonight is a special, if interesting night for the Washington Capitals. For one thing, they kick off the second half of the season against the Montreal Canadiens, and we all know that is an interesting team to face.

For another, though, they will be honoring 2010 Hall of Fame inductee Dino Ciccarelli in a ceremony prior to the game. The Capitals will wear their WInter Classic-style throwback jerseys, and all fans will receive a limited edition Ciccarelli Upper Deck trading card. Ciccarelli will be honored with a ceremonial puck drop before the game begins.

It's interesting because Ciccarelli was only a member of the team for four years out of his 19, and is just as well known for his career elsewhere. It's also interesting because of this incident, as Eric McErlain notes:

May 1990 - a story of four hockey players and a 17 year old girl in a limo parked in an alley behind Champions sports bar in Georgetown hits the press. She claims she was raped & otherwise molested by 4 Caps players, naming Dino Ciccarelli as the main perpetrator.

No criminal indictments were ever returned, but that didn't stop the Caps from giving away Ciccarelli in 1992. Still, time heals all wounds, and it's fitting that Dino gets honored tonight. Here's hoping someone brings out a rat to freak him out on the ice.
