Blue Jackets Vs. Capitals: Furious Second Period Ends With Caps Leading 3-2

If you blinked, you may have missed four goals.

The Capitals and Blue Jackets traded four goals within 2:17, but as the second period horn sounded, Washington held a 3-2 lead.

The Caps had plenty of chances at the start of the second period, but could not convert. The Blue Jackets made the Caps pay for their missed opportunities when Antoine Vermette took advantage of a Matt Calvert rebound and tied the game at 1-1 at 11:10

Not to be outdone, MIke Knuble tied the game just 1:22 later by putting in a rebound of his own. A broken play in the neutral zone gave the Caps a quick breakout. Alex Ovechkin passed the puck to a trailing Nicklas Backstrom, who shot it on Steve Mason. Once again, Mason could not handle the rebound and Knuble was in the crease to put the puck in the empty net.

Fedor Tyutin answered back 42 seconds later by firing a wrist shot past a screened Michal Neuvirth, but Jason Arnott gave the Caps the lead once again 13 seconds later when he took a pass from Marco Sturm in the slot and beat Mason for his 16th goal of the season.

Michal Neuvirth has made 13 saves and the Caps hold a 27-15 shot advantage.
