The Washington Capitals finally capitalized on their continued assault of the net in this first-round Eastern Conference playoff series, scoring two quick goals in the second period and holding on to a 2-0 lead at the end of the second. Jason Chimera and Jason Arnott scored for the Capitals.
Chimera began the all-Jason goal assault, scoring at the 17:49 mark of period two on a Marcus Johannson feed that was too pretty to describe. Which is OK, because in this day and age, someone GIF'd it, right? Also, let's not dismiss Brooks Laich's dirty work getting that puck off the boards, allowing this scoring opportunity to even exist.
Not to be out done, late-season addition (and, frankly, late-season MVP) Jason Arnott jumped in on the scoring chances, hammering a deflected Mike Green slapshot past Henrik Lundqvist at the 15:52 mark of the second period to bring the tally to 2-0.
It's playoff hockey, so anything can obviously happen, but that was the first period in this series where the top-seeded Capitals did indeed seem like the dominant club. New York needs to come up with a whole new approach to have any chance in period three.
