The Washington Capitals lost their second straight game on their current six-game road trip Sunday night, falling to the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 at the United Center in Chicago.
The loss kept the Capitals two points ahead of Winnipeg and Buffalo in the race for the Eastern Conference's 8th and final playoff spot. Carolina defeated Winnipeg 4-3 Sunday night. Washington looked distinctly second-best in this game, as they were outshot 29-18.
The only goal of the third period was Bryan Bickell's empty-net goal with 1:47 left in regulation.
The Capitals continue their road trip Monday night, when they hit the ice at Joe Louis Arena to face the Detroit Red Wings.
