Ian Desmond's Two-Run Single Carries Nationals To 4-2 Win Over Braves

Washington, DC (Sports Network) – Ian Desmond’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Washington Nationals over the playoff-hopeful Atlanta Braves, 4-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

The Braves have lost five of six and now sit 6 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the NL East. Atlanta is a half-game behind San Francisco in the wild card standings. The Giants are currently playing the Rockies.

Nyjer Morgan and Mike Morse each had an RBI for the Nationals, who have won five of six.

Livan Hernandez went six-plus innings in the start, allowing two runs on seven hits. Sean Burnett (1-7) tossed two scoreless frames to pick up the win.

Rick Ankiel hit a solo homer and drove in both of Atlanta’s runs. Brandon Beachy, making his second start in the majors, gave up two runs on five hits over five frames. Kyle Farnsworth (0-2) suffered the loss.
