Ryan Zimmerman Injury Causes Nationals To Call Up Jesus Flores

Well, here's a bit of a surprise. In light of Ryan Zimmerman's injury forcing the Nationals' third baseman to a 15-day disabled list stint, the Nationals have filled the open roster spot by calling up Jesus Floresaccording to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.

This gives the Nationals three right-handed hitting catchers, which would seem like an unneeded luxury. Wilson Ramos and Ivan Rodriguez are already splitting the catching duties, so it would seem that there wouldn't be much use for Flores.

Jerry Hairston Jr. and Alex Cora are expected to get the majority of the time at third base with Zimmerman sidelined. The Nationals' franchise player has been dealing with a nagging abdominal injury since Spring Training, and it got worse when he slid into a base during the Nationals' game against the New York Mets last Saturday. His absence, combined with the nagging shoulder injury Adam LaRoche is playing through, creates a massive hole in the team's lineup.
