Ryan Zimmerman's Return From Injury Means Craig Stammen Will Be Sent Down

The Washington Nationals have activated Ryan Zimmerman from the disabled list after a two-month absence due to an abdominal injury, and have made a surprising decision on the man they demoted to Triple A to make room for Zimmerman on the roster. Pitcher Craig Stammen is ultimately the player Washington will send down, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson.

This means the Nationals will only have six pitchers in the bullpen and will have six position players on the bench. It's a little odd that the Nationals felt they needed six reserves, but perhaps they are worried about injuries. Regardless, it leaves them very thin with their pitching staff, which could come into play if the starters cannot go deep in games. It's also possible that this means Tom Gorzelanny is returning soon.

Stammen has thrown just two innings for the Nationals all season.
