Now there is a post headline you don't like to write. In case you missed it, last night in the second inning of a game between the Washington Nationals and Colordao Rockies, Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond hit a hard line drive right back at Rockies' pitcher Juan Nicasio. The ball hit Nicasio square in the face, immediately knocking him to the ground, where he lay motionless as trainers rushed to the mound.
Needless to say, it was one of the scariest moments I have ever seen in a baseball game. As it turns out, the hit ball broke Nicasio's neck, fracturing his C-1 vertebrae. The pitcher had surgery Saturday morning to repair the fracture.
Video can be found here, at 3030FM.com, courtesy of @Jose3030. Honestly, not every one is going to want to watch this. Best of luck to Nicasio in his recovery, and let's hope we don't see something like this again for a long time.
An update on Nicasio's recovery, when available, will be posted in this Baseball Nation StoryStream. For more on the Rockies, visit SB Nation Denver and Purple Row.
