We're now in the new calendar year of 2012 and Prince Fielder, one of the biggest names on the free agent market heading into the Winter, remains unsigned. The Nationals have been linked to him a number of times, but nothing really substantial has come of it. But according to a new report by Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Nationals have emerged as a favorite for Fielder in baseball circles.

An MLB official told me over the weekend that word is spreading in the industry that the Washington Nationals have emerged as a favorite to sign free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder.

Based on what we have seen before from the Nationals, they will likely continue to deny these rumors until something official comes out. But Fielder would be a huge addition to the Nationals team and would go a long way towards making them a contender in the Division. He would also help out a great deal in the box office.
