Prince Fielder Rumors: Mike Rizzo Said Nationals 'Had Parameters' That Tigers Exceeded

The Detroit Tigers beat out the Washington Nationals for Prince Fielder on Tuesday, signing him to a nine-year, $214 million deal. The Nationals were long seen as the favorites to sign Fielder, but in an interview with reporters, general manager Mike Rizzo confirmed that the price exceeded the Nationals' "parameters."

Via Amanda Comak of the Washington Times:

Those parameters were only exceeded at the very end, Rizzo said. He added that he met with Fielder once, but didn't elaborate on whether he actually made a formal contract offer.

Without Fielder, Adam LaRoche will be the team's opening-day first baseman, in all likelihood.
