The St. Louis Cardinals have removed left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia from the postseason roster because of an injury and have replaced him with right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller.
Garcia started Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the Washington Nationals on Monday night but had to be removed from the game after throwing 51 pitches in two innings of work. He underwent an MRI after the game that determined he has a rotator cuff strain in his throwing shoulder.
Garcia later admitted that he began to feel discomfort prior to Friday's Wild Card game against the Atlanta Braves but failed to tell any one about it until Monday night. Several members of the Cardinals organization have made it known that they are unhappy that Garcia would attempt to conceal the injury prior to such a pivotal game. Team general manager John Mozeliak said he was frustrated by the situation.
With Garcia removed from the roster, he will be ineligible to play in the National League Championship Series, if the Cardinals are are able to advance that far. The current series is tied at one-game apiece, with Game 3 scheduled to take place in Washington on Wednesday.
