Analyzing The Stats: The Redskins Defense Doesn't Make A Lot Of Sense

I was just perusing the NFL defensive team stats and I found some interesting things regarding the Redskins. They have a very odd combination of defensive stats that don't seem to go very well together. The Bad:

↵
    ↵
  • Last in the NFL giving up 420 yards a game.
  • ↵
  • By far the most downs played with 430.
  • ↵
  • An average of nearly six yards given up on each of those 430 snaps.
  • ↵
  • Fourth in time spent on the field per game.
  • ↵
↵

The Good:

↵
    ↵
  • Ninth overall in defensive third down percentage.
  • ↵
  • Only 14th in points allowed per game at 19.8
  • ↵
↵

They might not be incredible, but they are much better than you might expect from a defense with those other stats. The Redskins might just have the stingiest sieve-like defense of all time.
