Albert Haynesworth will have the opportunity to accept a plea deal instead of having to potentially go to trial on charges of misdemeanor sexual abuse stemming from an incident where he allegedly fondled a cocktail waitresses' breasts at the W Hotel in February. The plea deal would reduce Haynesworth's charge to a simple assault, which is a lesser charge.
In a letter to Haynesworth attorney, filed in D.C. Superior Court, the U.S. Attorney's Office has offered Haynesworth the opportunity to plead guilty to simple assault, rather than face trial for the charge on which he was indicted.
In the filing, prosecutor Heide Herrmann says the offer will expire May 17.
If Haynesworth were convicted of sexual abuse, he could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Haynesworth lawyer declined to comment to the Associated Press. May 17 happens to be about three weeks away at this point.
