Redskins Draft Dejon Gomes: Four Things Washington Fans Should Know About Him

The Washington Redskins have selected safety DeJon Gomes from Nebraska with the 146th pick in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Let's get to know him!

No. 1: Jones seems to have a knack for the ball, something that has in recent years been sorely missing at Redskins Park. He had seven interceptions in 23 career games at Nebraska, also forcing five fumbles. In 2010, Gomes finished second on the team with 99 tackles, adding a sack and four tackles for loss.

No. 2: Jones wasn't even sure he would be drafted at all, let alone in the fifth round.

Former NU safety DeJon Gomes is one of those who could land on either side of the fence: drafted or undrafted free agent. Although he knows what could happen if his name isn’t called, he has tried not to let it add to his anxiety.

"It’s just another bump in the road," Gomes said Monday. "It’s unfortunate that it happens this year. But if it’s for the greater good of the game and for the players, it has to happen this way."

No. 3: The 6-0, 200-pound Gomes is a safety/linebacker hybrid whose flexibility will make him an asset on the Redskins defense. He also adds another athlete to a special teams squad that always needs help.

No. 4: He appears to be one of the good guys. He and fellow Cornhusker Prince Amukamara took time to visit a young boy named Darius Antonides, whi has periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), playing Nintendo 64 with him at his home. I think Jones and Roy Helu Jr. are about to be fast friends.
