NFL Free Agents 2011: Should Redskins Consider Plaxico Burress?

Fans have always thought of Santana Moss as having the set of skills more appropriate to be a No. 2 receiver than a No. 1. With Moss now signed to a three year contract, and with a deep free agent wide receiver class, this could be the year that the Washington Redskins have the opportunity to add a top-flight receiver. If they're unable to make a deal with Santonio Holmes, Sidney Rice, or Braylon Edwards, they may look to Plaxico Burress.

Pros: Burress is an absolute game-changer, and at 6'-5", he has the height necessary to be the target receiver in the end zone that the Redskins hav ebeen missing for years. Burress averaged 1,076 yards and 10 touchdowns in his last three full seasons with the New York Giants.

Cons: Burress hasn't played an organized football game since 2008, missing the last two seasons while spending time in a New York prison. No one knows what kind of shape he will be in. Burress will be 34 at the start of the NFL season, which is far past the prime age for wide receivers.

Verdict: I have no doubt that Burress will be motivated to prove he can still play, and he'll make a fine addition for a team that is just one player away from competing for a championship. The Redskins are much more than just one player away. He'll go elsewhere.
