The Washington Redskins have released defensive end Phillip Daniels, the latest move in the team's apparent effort to transition to a much younger roster. Daniels had been with the Redskins since 2004, and was a reliable presence up front, a solid run-stopper who was, at his best, a capable pass-rusher as well. He is respected in the locker room and has a reputation as a classy individual.
Drafted out of the University of Georgia, Daniels has been in the NFL since 1996. He is 38 years old and has accumulated 62 sacks in his 15-year NFL career for the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears and Redskins. Daniels confirmed the bittersweet news Thursday on his twitter account:
Although it's sad to see a mainstay like Daniels leave, it's hardly surprising. The team's moves this offseason have been indicative of an organization trying to become younger so as to build their roster from the ground up.
