In an attempt to give incumbent Graham Gano some competition in training camp, the Washington Redskins will sign former Cincinnati Bengals kicker Shayne Graham, according to a report by Chris Russell of ESPN 980. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan confirmed the news in his post-practice press conference.
Graham was a mainstay as the Bengals' kicker for seven years from 2002 to 2009. He was released after a playoff failure in 2009 and spent time with the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots last season. Shanahan was satisfied with Gano despite a sometimes-erratic first season where he missed 11 field goal attempts, so the guess here is that Graham is there just to push Gano.
Gano is a native of Radford, Va. and attended Virginia Tech, so he is sort of a local guy.
