Though the Washington Redskins moved the ball efficiently throughout the first quarter, so far they only have three points to show for it. After an impressive drive that featured strong running from Tim Hightower and rookie Roy Helu, the Redskins proved unable to put the ball in the end zone and settled for a chip shot 26-yard field goal from kicker Graham Gano.
The home team ended the first quarter facing a 7-0 deficit. Despite over 120 yards of offense in the quarter and eight first downs quarterback Rex Grossman threw two interceptions in the first 15 minutes.
The first interception came after a long opening drive where the Redskins looked dominant. Moving the ball on the ground and hitting receivers and tight ends, Grossman's execution was excellent until the throw to the other team. The Cardinals did not capitalize on the first turnover though as the Redskins' defense forced a punt.
The second interception may not have been Grossman's fault. The ball glanced off receiver Anthony Armstrong, but television replays also showed that the referees clearly missed a pass interference call on the play. Richard Marshall grabbed the ball for the Cardinals and rumbled more than 30 yards on the return. Two plays later, Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb found tight end Jeff King for a 21 yard touchdown.
