Rex Grossman will soon be named the Washington Redskins' starting quarterback for Week 1 against the New York Giants, according to a report by Jason La Canfora of NFL Network. It remains unclear exactly why Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has picked Grossman instead of John Beck, who he has been high on all winter, but one reason is their preseason performance.
Both quarterbacks certainly had their moments, but Grossman seemed to get the better of Beck after looking at the numbers. Grossman completed 34 of 53 passes for 407 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a 92.3 quarterback rating, while Beck was 30 of 48 for 356 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a 74.7 rating. By the numbers, that makes Grossman the clear winner.
In other words, Grossman's preseason probably won him the job. Nevertheless, some were calling for Grossman before the preseason began, including SB Nation's Redskins blog Hogs Haven.
