Fred Davis injury update: Redskins TE likely out for season with torn Achilles

Fred Davis tore his Achilles tendon on Sunday and will reportedly be out for the year.

Rob Grabowski-US PRESSWIRE

Redskins TE Fred Davis ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Giants.

Davis will miss the rest of the season and he may have played his last down with the Redskins, as his contract will expire at the end of this year.

Davis pulled up lame near the end zone as the Skins were knocking on the door. He hobbled off the field without putting any weight on his left foot and it was abundantly clear that Davis wasn't dealing with a garden-variety ankle sprain. The USC product was diagnosed of the tear without an MRI and could face of rehab of eight months, although Terrell Suggs returning so soon is an encouraging sign and shows the progress of modern medicine to one of the most debilitating injuries a player can sustain.

The Skins have very little depth behind Davis, with Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen as the next two on the depth chart.

Paul is viewed as the better blocker and Paulsen should run most of the routes, should things stay the same. However, re-signing free agent Chris Cooley could certainly be an option as rookie Robert Griffin III could use a tight end with the extra blitzes he sees.
