Redskins sign CB Jerome Murphy, place Brandon Meriweather on IR

The Washington Redskins announced that they have signed free agent Jerome Murphy and have placed safety Brandon Meriweather on injured reserve.

Brad Mills-US PRESSWIRE

The Washington Redskins placed safety Brandon Meriweather on injured reserve on Tuesday, according to a statement released by the team. In the same statement, the Redskins also announced the signing of cornerback Jerome Murphy.

Meriweather tore his ACL in Sunday's victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Acquired this past offseason as a free agent, Meriweather has struggled to get on the field as he suffered an MCL and PCL sprain in his left knee during the preseason. He then re-aggravated the injury during warmups for the team's Week 4 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was forced to miss more time before ultimately sustaining his most recent injury on Sunday (his debut with the team).

With Meriweather done for the year, Murphy will take over his roster spot. Originally selected with the No. 65 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, Murphy played one season with the Rams before being picked up on waivers by the New Orleans Saints. After playing in two games with New Orleans, he was placed on waivers again and was picked up by the Detroit Lions.
