2012 Super Bowl TV Ratings: NFL's Big Game Sets Viewership Record

The overall TV ratings for the 2012 Super Bowl may not have beaten last year's or halftime-show performer Madonna, but the thrilling contest between the New York Giants and New England Patriots did set a new viewership record with 111.3 million average viewers.

Reported earlier Monday, the Super Bowl received a overnight rating of 47.8 rating, which was down a tenth of last year's (47.9).

The Giants ended up edging the Patriots, 21-17, to claim their second Super Bowl title in five years and fourth overall. The Patriots failed to avenge a loss to the Giants in the '08 Super Bowl, which featured New England losing 17-14.
