Capitals Local TV Ratings Up 29 Percent From 2009/10, Now Well Above Wizards Ratings

We have reached the point where the Washington Capitals are smashing the Washington Wizards in local TV ratings. Not that this is any surprise to many, but for those of us who can remember when this was seen as more of a basketball town than a hockey town (some still think so), it's still shocking. John Ourand of Sports Business Journal has the details.

Never thought I'd see the day when the Caps TV ratings are 25% higher than the Wizards' in DC. Caps draw 39K homes/game; Wizards are at 31K.less than a minute ago via web

It's all the culmination of the Capitals' major push in the D.C. television market this season. According to Ourand's Sports Business Journal article, Capitals ratings on Comcast SportsNet are up 29 percent this year over last year, which is one of the biggest increases in the league. Only St. Louis and Boston has seen bigger jumps year-to-year than the Caps.

All this despite the fact that the Capitals aren't playing nearly as well as they did last year. I guess it does pay for local sports teams when one of the other teams in town falters.
